“WHY DOES THIS MATTER NOW?”

Any incarceration without due process is unjust and goes against the fundamental principles of our country. The incarceration of more than 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II serves as a powerful lesson about the dangers of wartime hysteria and the consequences of violating civil rights in the name of public safety.

Because of this past injustice, the Japanese American community continues to be a strong advocate for civil liberties today.

As part of the effort to preserve and understand this history, this exhibit tells the story of Japanese American incarceration in both local and national contexts. We hope it serves as a poignant testament to the Japanese concept of gaman—enduring the seemingly impossible with grace and dignity.
