2024 Golden Week Celebration Recap

June 7, 2024

On May 19, 2024 the annual JACL-AZ Golden Week 2024 Celebration was held to commemorate a week-long celebration of several holidays in Japan that occur each Spring. During the celebration the community gathered to recognize and honor youth scholarship awardees, the winner of the annual JACL AZ essay contest, Gold Saguaro Tribute awardees, and to reconnect with members of the community.
Bill Staples, President of the AZ-JACL Board, skillfully steered the event, punctuated by a delightful musical interlude from classical jazz musician Pam Morita, who graced us with her original compositions. Dr. Kathy Nakagawa captivated the audience with her enlightening keynote address, leaving everyone enriched by her insights. Vicente Reid, CEO of the Arizona Asian Chamber of Commerce shared some insightful remarks as our guest speaker, including the announcement of the much anticipated international district in Phoenix.
We celebrated the achievements of numerous remarkable community youths, including Dylon Hill, honored with the Student Essay Award, as well as Joshua Tominaga and Kenna Yoshimura, recipients of JACL AZ Scholarships. These students and future leaders were acknowledged for their exceptional merit and dedication to the Japanese American community.
The Gold Saguaro Awards were conferred upon Kathy and Minoru Inoshita, and Phil Okuma, in recognition of their significant contributions to the Arizona Japanese American community.
We appreciated the delicious bento box lunches provided by Hana Japanese Eatery
A recording of the event will be posted on the JACL AZ YouTube channel soon, stay tuned!
