The U.S. military is honoring the Nisei soldiers, Japanese Americans who bravely fought in WWII to liberate Italy and France, even as their own families were interned back home as perceived enemies after Pearl Harbor. Descendants of these soldiers, including the Sakato family, visited Italy to trace their relatives’ wartime paths and attend a commemoration at Camp Darby, marking the 80th anniversary of Livorno’s liberation. The 442nd Regimental Combat Team, including the 100th Batallion, comprised almost entirely of Nisei soldiers, became the most decorated unit in U.S. military history.
